Friendly Competition

Hey ya'll! Have you had your "cuppa joy" today? I was born in Texas, grew up in Georgia. Now living back in Texas for the past 23 years and just recently found out I am only 89% fluent in English. Excuse me. Repita por favor.  I speak Texan, a little bit of Spanish, and know a few words in French & Italian. English is my native tongue, so you can see how shocked I was to learn this. It all began with my husband and his newly found love of apps. He initiated a language tutorial in German, then added Italian & Portuguese. Yes, he is attempting to learn these simultaneously. Our granddaughter found this to be intriguing and asked to use it to supplement her Spanish class. "Why yes, lovie; of course you can!" As I was listening to the banter of these two, I began to understand a bit more of the dynamics that were taking place.  These apps have achievement levels, and in our house that translates to "Competition". A  feisty, 9 yr old and a middle-aged man/ part-time man-child, can create quite a commotion. He absent-mindedly  let it slip that he was 68% fluent in English according to the study guide test. Remember in yesterday's blog my mentioning that I love challenges? 1 Taking my place at the computer, logged into the website and found the study guide test.  It couldn't be that hard could it?  It was pretty straight forward, but it was timed with a little countdown in the upper left hand corner. Ever taken a test or worked a puzzle with a timer clicking away? It can be quite the sensory overload, a little too much for me. I usually work well with the adrenaline push but it kept  me aware of the seconds ticking away as my eyes shifted from the quiz at hand and the  dial of doom. I couldn't be outdone, I had to do this. Done! Completed! Finito! Alas, only 89%.  Hmm...looks like I need to brush up a bit. Sharing with my little lovie my score, she replied with the same spirit that runs in our blood: "Bet I can get 90%." Pausing, tilted her head slightly to the right and raising her right eyebrow with serious control, then replied "Or even a 100. I study this you know." Made me smile. I love seeing that confidence of a young one eager to learn. Reminds  me of a quote I saw the other day. Dreams Care to take the challenge or want to discover a new language?
